Up Close and Personal on the Farm

September 17, 2016 by rpf5y

We held our first Farm Tour this past summer to let our customers get up close and personal with the cattle and see the operation of the farm first hand.

We are committed to contributing to a change in the paradigm of food production from the ‘industrial model’ to a more sustainable, local and organic model that provides a food product that contributes to health and is environmentally sustainable. The farm tour was an opportunity for us to put this into practice.

We talked about the grass fed model and how it differs from the conventional beef model for the cattle, the environment and the healthfulness of the beef and answered questions regarding the treatment of the animals, the butchering process and packaging alternatives.

We walked the pastures, sweating on a 90-degree day in June, to see the various herds grazing on the farm. We brought along apple slices to feed to the cattle, particularly the calves and talked about how we try to develop our pastures and allow the cows to graze the best grass for as much of the year as possible.

Our plan to increase the size of our herd and expand into complementary animal husbandry were discussed and we decided to hold more regular tours so that our customers are able to experience our operation and feel confident in our commitment to sustainable agriculture and healthy food.

Look for another tour some time next year!

Internships & Apprenticeships

Pittsburgher Highland Farm is a laboratory for sustainable agriculture, and we welcome anyone interested in spending some time on a working regenerative farm to participate. This could be as simple as working for us from time to time or as involved as an actual internship or apprenticeship (that’s how the hog and duck enterprises started).
